SUNJET II is organized along the following WPs:

WP Leader: Airbus Group Innovations (AGI-F)

The objective of WP1 is to put in place the project master plan giving the milestones & report timing and costing, as well as to monitor the timely performance of that project master plan. The objective is also to ensure the project administration towards the European Commission (EC).

WP Leader: EASN-Technology Innovation Services (EASN TIS)

A critical part of SUNJET II is to further enhance the B2B relations between the EU and Japan, as well as to propose effectual communication, networking and collaboration opportunities between the two entities. Accordingly, the main objective of this WP is to develop an effective dissemination, exploitation and networking strategy so as to: i) make the SUNJET II platform widely known to the end-users, the relevant target groups and key R&T players, and ii) to ensure the sustainability and long-term operation of this platform after the end of the project. The highly ambitious goal of creating a portal aiming to provide continuous up-to-date information for the aeronautics research and for collaboration and investment opportunities in the EU and Japan can only be achieved if the targeted end-users start using the platform extensively.

Based on the above, the main aim of the project’s dissemination strategy is to realize effective communication activities, utilizing dedicated apposite tools and mechanisms, so as to properly diffuse the project’s outcomes to the targeted end users from industry, research establishments, academia, and policy-making authorities (such as European Commission, ACARE, EASA, EUROCONTROL, METI, MEXT etc.) with the ultimate goal to ensure the extensive use and viability of the SUNJET II platform even beyond the end of the project.

Dissemination and communication activities are of paramount importance to a Coordination and Support Action project such as SUNJET II, in order to maximize its impact and trigger effects across the targeted R&T stakeholders and communities. Through the work that will be carried out during the project, it is aspired the solid dissemination of the SUNJET II results towards the targeted audiences, as well as the raise of awareness of the project’s findings, allowing, inter alia, for the requisite sustainability of the SUNJET II platform beyond the end of the project. Moreover, considering that, in complex knowledge sectors such as R&T, there is fierce competition for people’s time and input, SUNJET II shall address the topic in a systematic way.

WP Leader: EASN-Technology Innovation Services (EASN TIS)

The objectives of WP3 are to create a Web Platform to act as a one-stop-shop for information related to opportunities for networking and collaboration: social network (contact lists), calendar of events, marketplace with ongoing open calls and more and to provide the collaborative environment to assist in networking, exchange of information, collaboration, communication and organization of events.

Within WP3, an on-line platform will be developed, the SUNJET II communication platform, for the needs of the SUNJET II project. The platform will be designed to host social, and semantic functionalities in order to boost the initial communication of the EU-Japan network created in SUNJET project and also aiming to further enhance the B2B relations between the two continents. It will also include calendar of events with information on performed, scheduled and upcoming events of mutual interest.


The objective of WP4 is to set up a Forum of exchanges between European and Japanese stakeholders in the field of aviation. This Forum will materialize in 2 time spaces: some physical workshops enabling direct contact and networking between participants, and a permanent Forum platform to allow maintaining and developing new contacts remotely.

Every 6 months a joint workshop between the European and Japanese stakeholders involved in aerospace research will be organized. It will be hosted in turns in Europe and Japan. These Workshops are an opportunity to exchange on specific strategic and technical topics with experts guest speakers from industry and academia and discuss results, progress and planning personally.

In order to maintain a permanent contact between the workshops, and to enable further exchanges among partners, a forum platform will be set up, encompassing social network features (profiles of each company, areas of interest and expertise) to allow generating new contacts and finding new partners when building a new project.


The objective of WP5 is to provide guidance to those willing to build a joint research project between Europe and Japan. This Guidance Desk should provide guidance material to the members of the SUNJET II Consortium, and beyond its scope, to a much wider community.

WP5 will focus on collecting EU recommendations and best practices from past EU/Japan projects, synthesizing this knowledge on best practices and provide these Recommendations (“do’s and don’ts when working between EU and Japan”) to the partners and to providing a “MarketPlace” with an updated list of ongoing calls in EU and Japan at any time, with their content, budget and schedule, to support partners willing to build their own joint research project.

WP Leader: Airbus Group Innovations (AGI-F)

WP6's main objective is to facilitate and enhance the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe in the Aircraft domain with the creation of common roadmaps. Starting from the previous SUNJET project with the lessons learned, relevant inputs on the Aircraft field will be updated.

WP6 will focus on the compilation of roadmaps, including scope beyond strict aerospace perimeter where similar technology may be exploitable, and the support to cross-fertilization, exchanges and consistency with other roadmaps (WP11 and WP12).

WP Leader: BAE Systems (Operations) Ltd (BAES)

The main objective of this work package is to facilitate and enhance the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe in the Systems and Equipment domain with the creation of common technology roadmaps. Starting from the previous SUNJET project the lessons learned will be applied and relevant tasks applicable to this study domain undertaken as listed below.

WP7 is dedicated to provide support to SUNJET lessons learnt review activity, to alignment and cross-fertilization, to exchanges and consistency with other roadmaps, to key stakeholders identification and workshops (WP4), to Guidelines towards future joint projects (WP5) and will also focus on compilation of roadmaps, including scope beyond strict aerospace perimeter where similar technology may be exploitable.


Inputs will be provided from the EREA domain to the synthesis of the current situation for R&T projects in cooperation between Japan and Europe (link to WP5). A review will be performed on the different actors implied in R&T, the existing funding systems, the on-going EU-Japan cooperation activities and the main hurdles encountered in the cooperation. Within WP8 an update and collection of new topics for potential cooperation will be performed and the discussion with the Japanese partners (JAXA and others) will be pursued and enhanced.

As EREA representative, the task leader will propose contributions to workshops (WP4) and provide inputs to WP2 for the communication website and also make the link with EREA members, informing the community of the progress of the work and asking their advice and eventually some inputs.

Discussions will take place with WP6(Aircraft), WP7(Systems and Equipment), WP9(Academia), WP10(Clusters) to share the experience, evidence the common findings (areas and themes of common interest) and to organize the research topics through Technology Streams. Contribution will be provided to the definition of recommendations and Technical Roadmaps ensuring their consistency (taking into account the results of the specific call of 2015).

WP8 will participate to the definition of methodology to facilitate the cooperation in future projects.

WP Leader: EASN-Technology Innovation Services (EASN TIS)

The main objective of WP9 is to facilitate and enhance the cooperation in R&T activities between Japan and Europe in the Academic domains with close links with the other stakeholders aiming to common roadmaps. Starting from the previous SUNJET project with the lessons learned, relevant inputs from the Academic domain will be updated.

WP9 will focus on updating the developed SUNJET roadmaps and existing teams, so as to match current short-term and long-term R&T goals with an updated plan realizing R&T EU and Japan cooperation. Will also focus on identifying and collecting additional topics and areas of common interest between EU-Japan and between Academia, Industry and Research Establishments.


On European level clusters are seen as an important factor for the explanation of the empirical phenomenon of geographical concentration of economic and innovation activities. These clusters can be defined as a group of firms, related economic actors, and institutions that are located near each other and have reached a sufficient scale to develop specialized expertise, services, resources, suppliers and skills . The objective of this work package is to provide a broad overview of cooperation opportunities to SMEs members among the European aerospace cluster network EACP with Japanese counterparts in sector-based terms. The aim of WP10 is to produce a first outline of roadmaps at the European level synthesizing existing cooperative practices with Japanese counterparts. This WP will consolidate existing roadmaps and identify all potential SMEs that may be involved in future EU-Japan cooperative proposals in order to enlarge the SUNJET dynamics.

WP Leader: Airbus Group Innovations (AGI-F)

WP11 objectives are to ensure consistency of roadmaps developed in WP6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, in terms of granularity and content, to verify the results of the pull and push modes for the identification of needs and the elaboration of roadmaps, and finally, to ensure the link with the database structure developed in WP3.

WP11 will ensure the consistency, interconnection and the level of analysis of the roadmaps produced. The results of the Pull and Push mode for the identification of needs and the elaboration of roadmaps will be checked:

  • Pull Mode: Integrator 6 should pull the technologies they need from 7-10, including beyond the strict aerospace environment.
  • Push Mode: 7-10 should suggest their promising technologies for an application inside the 6 roadmap.

WP Leader: Airbus Group Innovations (AGI-F)

WP12 objective is to select key topics and produce concrete recommendations for future EU-Japan cooperation in the field of aviation.

WP12 work will focus on:

  • Selecting Preferred Topics and perform preliminary assessment of time, efforts and funding required to conduct the research. Identify benefits and impacts of selected topics, potential barriers and solutions to overcome them (including key stakeholders).
  • Producing proposal for future calls.

The objective of WP13 is to ensure that the entities willing to build a joint EU/Japan research project will continue to benefit from the services and tools developed by SUNJET II even after the closure of the Project.
